Lately, I find I'm using what is happening in my life and in the world. I read the newspapers a lot. Unfortunately, you don't have to reach that far to get to the despair in this world, and also to the hope that is always there, too. I kind of do the song now like a prayer.

-Laurie Beechman, about singing "Memory", as quoted in The New York Times, 1985

I was shocked to hear of Laurie's passing. I signed the guest book not too long ago, and mentioned I had replaced Laurie years ago in Annie on Broadway. Always a kind, generous woman, Laurie showed us all what true courage really is. The world has lost a very bright star. She is certainly singing up a storm now in heaven with the angels!

Those of us who love musical theatre have been truly enriched by Laurie's talent. Her courage and optimism in the face of such drastic odds against her are awe-inspiring. She will forever live on through her recordings. I taped Laurie's appearance on the Phil Donahue Show several years ago where she spoke about her illness and ended by singing Memory better than anyone else ever had or ever will again. Thank you for this wonderful web site remembrance of one my all time favorite performers.

Like many others, my first introduction to Laurie was her Star To Be turn in Annie. I was thrilled by her voice and in 1982 met Laurie when my partner was in the cast of Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Laurie. I never stopped being thrilled by her magnificent voice and electrifying performing. Throughout the years I have had the pleasure of knowing Laurie as a performer and as a person and am so happy to have had the great privelege. I recently went through a personal tragedy and spent many hours listening to Laurie's No One Is Alone CD. I was truly helped and inspired by her singing and her strength. I have directed many productions of Joseph... over the past few years and dedicate all future productions of Joseph.. I direct to Laurie...thank you, Laurie.,..you sure will be missed.

Although I have never had the honor of meeting Laurie or even seeing her perform, she will remain an inspiration to me always. I am a musical theatre major at Webster Conservatory of Theatre Arts. I am 21 years old and have had heart surgery three times. I also am the owner of a pacemaker. I need it in order to live. When I was four I had open-heart surgery. Since then, I decided I wanted to be a performer on the stage. I sing, act and dance. Because I am so active here at school taking dance and gymnastics, I have injured myself twice by pulling the wire(lead) out of place. The doctors tell me that I should consider other plans for my career. Absolutely not! Not only have I been studying for years, but I love it and don't know what else I could do. I'm horrible at math. Anyway, I recently had to pull out of our production of the premiere of CAMILA. I had to have surgery again and a new pacemaker. Whenever I get discouraged I listen to her albums. They are filled with HOPE and inspiration to just keep going on. Laurie didn't let anyone or anything silence her and she taught me that as well. Thank You. Now you can sing with the angels now. I'll never forget you. Prayers and love to her couragous family.

When the 1st National Tour of CATS opened in Boston sometime in the early '80's, I remember sitting in the Colonial Theater listening to this ravishing singer portraying Grizzabella. Then, shortly before the end of the show, she staggered onto the stage one more time to sing the complete MEMORY. I was mesmerized by the sadness in her eyes and the way her entire body seemed to drip with solemnity. But those eyes.......there was a world of sadness in those eyes. Then she knelt down on the stage floor and seemed to be listening for sounds from the ground. Suddenly the orchestra began to build, the actress rose to her feet, stretched one ragged arm up to heaven and sang that final verse, Touch me, it's so easy to leave me, all alone with the memory of my days in the sun. It was as if every seat in the theater was wired as everyone seemed to rise about 6 inches in their seats. I still remember my mother turning and looking at me, as if to say Have you ever heard anything like this? I never had and, despite numerous journeys to see CATS to capture that magical moment, the only times I've ever heard it since were the three times I saw Laurie perform the role again. I paid upwards of $50 to see a tired boring musical with no plot that had about 8 minutes of absolute wonder! (And only when Laurie was in it!) I am so glad my son was able to hear her sing last fall when I took him to see CATS -- and I waited until I KNEW Laurie was in it because, as I told my boy many times, You haven't lived until you have heard Laurie Beechman sing, LIVE. I feel sorry for those out there who will NEVER experience this magic. Laurie, I will miss you terribly. For as long as I live I will go to see Broadway shows with fantastic Divas and I will leave shaking my head and saying, Laurie could have sung the HELL out of that!!!! LOVE AND SADNESS M WRIGHT Our lives become The stories that we weave --- ONCE ON THIS ISLAND

It took four days for the news of Laurie Beechman's death to make the Chicago papers. I have the great pleasure to have seen her on stage twice and at Rainbow and Stars twice. I also have all of her CD's (except for the rock one, which I just learned of.) I also had the great pleasure to have met her at Rainbow and Stars. She was an incredible talent whom I personallly will miss. Now I must cherish my CD's for they are all that remain. I had seen Laurie in Cats, but had filed that memory away. I was watching a cable show in the 80's and she was a guest promoting Listen to my Heart. Her singing brought me and the host to tears. I wrote down her name and the album name. It took a year to find that CD, and I never stopped collecting. What a great talent.

When I was eight, I got the Annie cast recording. I quickly tired of Annie and the orphans, but couldn't get enough of the Star to Be. Hearing Laurie's style of singing influenced me, and shaped the way I sound. I'm happy to say that I also got to play the Star-to-Be in our local community theatre production of Annie. My greatest compliment, of course, came when someone remarked, You sound just like the girl on the record.

I knew Laurie since the mid 70's . She appeared at two clubs I ran O'nela's 57th St. & The Broadway Room at O'Neal's 43rd St. Every night it seemed to be a new show. She was wonderful. But my special moment was when she held my then two year old daughter (now 18) on her lap through a rehersal. Laurie knew my wife an I over the years. When my wife came down with breast cancer Laurie wrote her a wonderful letter of hope. It is a great loss.

I have been a huge fan of Laurie Beechman since she appeared in Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Cats. I have all of her albums and was lucky enough to see her twice at Rainbow and Stars in New York City. It was a personal thrill for me to meet her and get her autograph after each of her shows at Rainbow and Stars. She was such a down to earth and genuinely nice person. Since hearing of her passing, I have done nothing but listen to her albums over and over. I have never been so saddened by the death of someone that I really didn't know. As a performer in musical theater productions since high school, she has been an idol of mine and I have used some of her arrangements in my performances. I would love to hear from other people who loved her as much as I did. At least we will always have her music; her gift to the world.

To Laurie's family, My deepest sympathy on the loss of your Daughter, sister, wife. I first learned of Laurie through the People magazine article from 1995. I was so moved by her story I went out that day and bought Listen To My Heart. In fact I still have the article folded inside the cd box.I was also moved by her voice on that album...Beautiful , hopeful songs sung with that incredible voice. I taped the inaugural gala just to have Laurie on tape..I also have her Andrew Lloyd Webber cd. She had an incredible voice and an indomitable spirit and will be missed. My only regret is that I didn't get to see her on broadway. I will be donating to Gilda's Place in Laurie;s memory...hopefully someday there will be some new strides made in the treatment of ovarian cancer. sincerely, Kay Crain

It is difficult to express the great loss I feel. Laurie was one of the brightest stars and most glorious voices to ever appear on stage. She could make me feel a song like no one else. I can still remember the impact of hearing Listen to my Heart for the first time. I can't help but see her now as the newest voice in the greatest choir of all. Laurie, you made it to the heavyside layer and I know you're laughing and singing and far beyond the troubles of earth. Many years ago, I bought tickets to a new show on Broadway entitled Joseph and the Amazing techniclor Dreamcoat. The curtain rose, the orchestra started playing, and this charming performer took her place on stage. Then she began to sing! I was mesmorized! Her voice sent chills through me. That beautiful voice was ao course that of Laurie Beechman. In all the shows I saw since then, there was never a more memorable night. I immediately purchased the soundtrack (which I still have to this day. I saw her again years later on the Rosie O'Donnell show, and again I fell in love. I was deeply saddened today when on Rosie's show again, I learned of Laurie's passing. We have all lost a truly shining light in this world of darkness. My condolences to her family. What can I say? How can you express how you feel about someone whose talent has touched your life in so many ways? Like others, I had the privilege of seeing Laurie in shows (Cats and Les Miz) and in concert at the Walnut St. Theater, and they are moments I will treasure forever. There have been moments in my life that I'm not sure I would have gotten through had I not had Laurie's Listen to My Heart CD for inspiration. I've lived in NJ and acted in community theater for a number of years now. The first role I got after moving to NJ was Star to Be in a production of Annie. I was so proud--not because I was performing, but because I had the honor to perform LAURIE's role. To say she was my idol is an understatement. My prayers go out to her family and friends. Stephanie and I first heard about Laurie when she appeared on the Donahue show, and spoke about cancer survivorship. Since my first wife died from cancer, we were particularly struck by her brave attitude. We had the priviledge of seeing Laurie at Mt. Graetna Theatre in PA, shortly after the release of the Andrew Lloyd Weber album. The song Love Changes Everything absolutely blew us away, and touched us in a life-changing way. Stephanie and I were married on June 1, 1996, and our first dance was to Love Changes Everything. Laurie is and will always be a special part of our life. I am truly saddened by Laurie's death. My wife and I saw her perform in Joseph and Annie and always thought she was a tremendous talent. We had been thinking of getting tickets for her scheduled performances at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck, NY, but didn't (I thought those were going to be this month, but I could be wrong). Our condolences to her family.

Laurie was a beautiful person who used her amazing talents to touch the lives of many others. I will never forget how she fought to live. Her music will live on in my heart forever, and she shall be in my memory and in my prayers. I want to wish love to her family for having such a wonderful and beautiful person, and I know that it must be hard for them right now, but I know they remember how special she was to so many of us. Laurie's smile and love of music touched us all. She could communicate more with a song than most can by writing a book. I had the joy of meeting Laurie when she was spreading her wings at Haddon Twp High. You could tell she had something very special back then. I had the privilege of seeing Laurie Beechman sing at Rainbow & Stars and in Cats this past June, and of meeting her twice. What a remarkable person she was! Her 'No One is Alone' CD certainly was - and still is - an inspiration to me. I doubt I'll be able to listen to it now without bursting into tears... again. Dear Sam : Hello, I was sorry to hear about Laurie Beechman today, just recieved word about her passing. It isn't always easy to know what to say at a time such as this. I know how hard it can be ...to let go...of someone very dear..and how difficult it can be to ..say good-bye to some one who has shown themselves to be so special in one's own life. Think good thoughts of her Sam and all of your friends there....and remember...tears are little healers for those left behind...she was a pretty lady and I know it's difficult Take good care...and remember.....I don't think Laurie would want any of you to suffer at all.....just wish her well ....and take good care. My wife and I are deeply saddened by the death of Laurie Beechman. She has brought so much joy into our home through her incredible recordings. They will serve as a testament to her extraordinary talent. We were also fortunate enough to see Laurie in cabaret twice in recent years: her return at Rainbow and Stars after remission, and again at Maxim's on the evening when the Yankees won the World Series, when about a dozen of us diehard fans came to cheer her on. These wonderful nights will live on in our memory forever. After the Maxim's performance, I saw Laurie with some friends at the bar, and couldn't restrain myself from going over and thanking her for her sharing with us her beautiful voice and bringing us so much happiness through her exceptional talent. I'm now so glad I did that. Laurie touched us deeply. She will be sorely missed, but she'll live on in our hearts, our memory, and, through her beautiful recordings, in our home. An angel is now singing in Heaven. We love you, Laurie.

I have this friend, Mike. Mike is your classic last minute Xmas shopper, so I was not surprised when Xmas Eve, I think it was 1988 or 89, he called me about 9 PM and asked me whether I wanted to tag along with him to Tower Records and Tower Books to do his Xmas shopping(By this time on Xmas Eve, Tower was about the only store left open). I laughed and said, Sure, I'd tag along. It was snowing or had just stopped I think. Just your average perfect Xmas Eve. I slogged through the snow(I don't live that far from Tower in the Village) and met Mike just outside Tower Records on Broadway. We went inside and we separated, Mike on a mission and me just to browse as I'd already completed my Xmas shopping. I wandered around for several minutes and wound up on the third floor where the jazz and classical sections were. I browsed aimlessly through the jazz section thinking that it was about time to corral Mike as he has a tendency to take forever when shopping. I was heading back toward the show tunes/soundtracks section when, as I was passing the middle section of CD racks, one CD cover caught my eye. If you know the Tower that I'm talking about, you'd know that the racks next to the stairs used to be a random collection of children's recordings and other miscelleny, so at first the CD cover really only caught my eye because I remember thinking that it didn't seem to belong there, and as it turned out, it didn't. I picked it up and checked out the photograph of the woman on the cover. I turned it over and saw another smaller picture of her singing on the back. I don't know what compelled me to do it but I bought that CD that night and it's not overstating to say that I've never been quite the same since. The CD was Listen To My Heart and I must've listen to it several thousand times since then. I've also been fortunate enough to have seen Laurie in person on a number of occasions and I have always been amazed by her gift and positive energy. Laurie Beechman was a gift to this world and her voice -- and I'm not talking about her vocal talents, though prodigious they were -- the voice that spoke soul to soul will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thanks Laurie.

I've never seen Laurie perform. A few years ago I hadn't even heard of her. Then Varese Sarabande put out her Andrew Lloys Webber album and I was hooked. I've been following her career ( and catching up on her recordings ) since then. No One is Alone continues to be played in my CD player constantly. There are so many things that I will miss about Laurie that I don't quite know where to begin. I am a distant cousin of Laurie's, and I was a fan from the first time that I met her when I was a very young kid visiting her backstage at the Winter Garden. I'll always remember seeing her after the shows and complimenting her like I was any fan, and she would always tell me to stop--that I was family and we should talk like normal people. I'll also remember the benefit concert she gave in Philadelphia to help a fellow actor fighting cancer who could no longer afford his bills. She and Claudia sang together on stage and were tremendous. Laurie, I will miss you terribly. I truly thought that I would bring my kids to hear you sing one day. I'm sure you're making the heavens shake with that wonderful voice. To Dolly and the rest of Laurie's family that has been so wonderful to me over the years, my most sincere and deepest condolensces. Wow... this certainly is shocking. I have been a fan of Laurie's for about 3 years now, even since hearing her CD Listen to My Heart. I was privileged to see Laurie in the Music of ALW tour. When I found out about her battle with cancer soon after I became a fan, I was shocked. How could someone with such a great strong voice be suffering with such an illness? It just isn't fair. I didn't quite know how to prepare for this day, I hoped that I would never see it and yet here it is so suddenly. Laurie is a reminder to all that no matter how bad our lives are, we need to live them to their fullest and be as optimistic as we can. Laurie, you certainly will be missed by all and you'll never walk alone. -Jim

Laurie Beechman was a powerful performer with a one-of-a-kind voice that reached inside you and pulled your heart into your throat. My favorite memories of her are her performance on the 1982 Tony awards, and her comeback cabaret appearance in the summer of 1989 in Stockbridge, Mass. Faith! I love your page. Laurie absolutely rocks! She's incredible! (maybe not as incredible as my favorite diva, click on my link to see who!) Your page is really great. I'm jealous that I can't do something like this! Rock on! All best, Farin at Smitty's desk

Wonderful website for a wonderful person and performer. Many years ago, Laurie and I sang in a New York showcase club called the Good Times on 3rd Avenue and 31st Street. I knew back then she was destined for stardom. She went on to perform in Annie a couple of years later. I was lucky enough in 1978 to replace her in Annie, playing all 5 roles. Only Laurie and I have ever played all 5 roles; after I left the show they were split up among several performers, and it remains that way to this day. It was great to reconnect with her doing my 11 days of rehearsal to replace her in Annie and I have not seen her since, although I have followed her career through the years. As a matter of fact, I live only 5 minutes from her in Westchester County, and she lives next door to some very dear friends of mine. I would love to get to see her again. Please give her my best regards and tell her I think of her from time to time, hoping she is well. I am still in show business myself, but have not been quite as lucky as Laurie. But please tell her I am very happy for all her success. Thanks, and God bless.

Great page Faith! Thanks for posting the URL to the LM list. Glad to see a Laurie Beechman page out there! Loved her since I was a little girl. Was lucky enough to catch her in LM on B'wy (course I was only 7 so I don't remember) I was raised on her! Only thing I won't do is see Cats again *g* Once is MORE than enough for me Lex

Laurie Beechman has a fabulous and powerful voice. Her Listen to My Heart was my song for our wedding video and a constant joy to listen to. That album is my favorite. It is one of those rare albums you can put on and never have to forward through any of the songs as they are all so enjoyable. I have all of her albums and I saw her in Cats in n.y.c years ago, never ever a disappointment. I wish her all the best..

Dear Faith, like yourself I am a big fan of Laurie Beechman. I regret to say that I have never seen her perform live. I do though have all her CD's. She is such an inspiration. If you ever hear of her comming to California please let me know. I am only able to get to NYC about twice a year. Thanks for the wonderful site, Steven
